University Drive Bike LaneA 2007 survey conducted by students from the Day One program at Mississippi State University showed bicyclists and pedestrians are making good use of the bicycle lane on University Drive. In one day, 491 bicyclists were seen traveling either west or eastbound in the lane, and 207 walkers or joggers used the lane. Bicyclist usage peaked early morning (around 9 a.m.) and also around the lunch hour. View a chart of bicyclist and pedestrian usage of the bike lane (.PDF). The survey also showed that it is important to educate Starkville bicyclists and pedestrians about safety. Almost 10% of cyclists were traveling the wrong way in a lane, and only 5% were wearing helmets. Starkville citizens are heavily using the University Drive bike lane. As bicycle traffic increases, please remember these simple rules:
