University Drive Bike Lane

A 2007 survey conducted by students from the Day One program at Mississippi State University showed bicyclists and pedestrians are making good use of the bicycle lane on University Drive.

In one day, 491 bicyclists were seen traveling either west or eastbound in the lane, and 207 walkers or joggers used the lane. Bicyclist usage peaked early morning (around 9 a.m.) and also around the lunch hour. View a chart of bicyclist and pedestrian usage of the bike lane (.PDF).

The survey also showed that it is important to educate Starkville bicyclists and pedestrians about safety. Almost 10% of cyclists were traveling the wrong way in a lane, and only 5% were wearing helmets.

Starkville citizens are heavily using the University Drive bike lane. As bicycle traffic increases, please remember these simple rules:

  1. Always travel in the same direction as motor vehicle traffic, not against it.
  2. Do not ride your bicycle on the sidewalk.
  3. Be alert, use hand signals when making turns or preparing to stop. Watch for people opening car doors.

For more information about safety issues, visit the links page for links to sites containing bicyclist, pedestrian, and motorist safety.

new bike racks in starkvilleBike rack at McKee Park

Thanks to Starkville Parks and Recreation, bicyclists can now find convenient bike racks at McKee Park on Lynn Lane, near the soccer fields at the Starkville Sportsplex, and at J.L. King Park on Long St. According to Clark Roman, Director of Starkville Parks and Recreation, these new bike racks were recently installed, and another bike rack will be put in place at Whitfield Street once the parking lot has been completed.

Other bike racks can be found at Moncrief Park on N. Jackson and at the soccer concession stand at the Starkville Sportsplex. These additions to our parks are making it easier for bicyclists to commute and safely park their bikes in Starkville.
